Reuse of Course Numbers

The ACC, in conjunction with the Registrar’s Office mandates that old course numbers not be used for a new course number for at least five years since that last date of offering to avoid confusion in the University Catalog for current, perspective, and/or returning students.

Active permanent courses numbers in use may be found in the University Catalog by using the search function on the catalog website home page or from the Course Descriptions section.

For more details on available course numbers, it's best practice to contact the Catalog and Curriculum Specialist who can provide a detailed spreadsheet of all courses in use/cancelled in an academic unit. It's also best practice to contact the Catalog and Curriculum Specialist when a new course is proposed to confirm the requested course number is available.

Exceptions to the mandate are the following:

  • If the old course number was cancelled within five years but hasn't been offered in more than five years. This exception is considered more if the available course number options for the academic unit are limited.
  • If the old course number was cancelled and never offered. In this scenario it's possible to reuse the course number the following academic year. Consult with the Catalog and Curriculum Specialist for more information about this exception.
