Shared Governance Policy
Effective Date
Senate passed April 21, 2025. It will go to Board of Trustees for final review.
Background
On April 7, 2025, Senate President Slouber shared a proposed revision to the Faculty Handbook which would create a set of guiding principles and critical elements for shared governance. During discussion, a concern was raised about lack of enforcement mechanisms. The Provost said that his experience has been mostly around communications issues and that is why he is working to build a network of shared governance. President Randhawa stated that shared governance is a culture and that he is not sure how to enforce a culture, because it is built on trust and communication. Senate President Slouber affirmed that the proposed policy would be meaningless unless agreed to by the Administration.
Senate Action
On April 21, a motion from Senate Executive Council to approve the draft revised shared governance language in the Faculty Handbook passed unanimously, with one abstention, with the following friendly amendments adopted by consent:
- Section (g) – Strike entire section
- Section (i) – Strike language following “jointly established”
- Section (k) – Change “important” to “necessary”
